CHAPTER EIGHT

“Captain Marsh. I ran into Captain Marsh. He’s really a lovely man, isn’t he? He had just heard about Charlotte and was devastated. I didn’t know they were old friends. He said Charlotte had an article from long ago about the two of them and had promised she’d give it to him when he came to town. I don’t remember now if he said it was a newspaper or magazine article. He asked if I’d seen it, and I told him I hadn’t, then he asked if I minded looking for it. He gave me his card and actually wrote his personal cell phone number on the card. Isn’t that amazing? I’ve never had a celebrity’s phone number before, so since you’re looking for blueprints, could you look for the article too?”

“Well, I really”

She interrupted me. “Thanks, I knew you wouldn’t mind. It’s very important to him. He was crushed that he didn’t see Charlotte before she died. He seemed to have the impression that her death was from natural causes. I didn’t say anything because he seems so fragile, and I didn’t want to hurt him even more. Was that wrong?”

“I don’t think so.” I rolled my eyes. That sneaky Coyote Man is not fragile.

“Good. Do you want me to text you his number, or do you want me to contact him after you find the article?”

“Why don’t you text me his number? I’ll let you know when I find it, and you can call him yourself unless you’re too busy, then I’ll call him.”

“That’s a good idea. I could meet him at the office to give him the article. I have to go; somebody else wants to use this pump.”

After Shirley hung up, I smiled as I told Barbara what Shirley said.

Barbara exhaled. “So, now we’re looking for a magazine article about Coyote Man and a blueprint. Are you going to tell me why that makes you so happy?”

“There has to be a correlation of some sort, right? Maybe we have a triangle here. Charlotte, Coyote Man, and Charlotte’s husband.”

“Are there any romance magazines in those boxes?” Barbara tittered as she opened up the first box. “Do you have any iced tea? Shouldn’t we have lunch first?”

I rolled my eyes. “I’ll pour iced tea, but it’s only ten o’clock. Hand me the lunch bag, and I’ll put it in the refrigerator.”

Barbara pulled out two large, insulated lunch bags from her backpack, and I poured our tea and emptied the sacks into the refrigerator. “Barbara, it’s only you and me for lunch.”

She raised up from peering in a box and smirked. “So far.”

I placed her glass of iced tea on the table next to her. “Is that a contingency, or do we need a big batch of cookies?”

She reached into her backpack and handed me a large box.

“Cookies?” I asked.

“You know me well.”

I glanced at the boxes and rubbed my chin. “House is relatively clean other than the clutter of boxes.”

She snorted. “We’ll toss a throw over them.”

I placed the box of cookies on the counter and smiled as I opened my box of magazines.
